Update on How I Cleared My Skin

If you’ve been reading and following along for a while, then you know that a hot topic on my blog for the past year and a half or so, has been how to clear up your skin.

Throughout high school and into the beginning of my college career, I struggled with really bad acne. Eventually, I decided enough was enough and decided to get on an Accutane regimen. You can read all about that here, and some of the other things I did to get the initially harshness of my acne to fade away.

Over the past year or so, I’ve really focused on clean, healthy skin, so as to keep my bad breakouts a thing of the past. I’ve found some new helpful ways to get rid of acne, so I’m here today for another update!

Develop a three-step routine with a gentle cleanser, a protectant SPF, and a hydrating moisturizer.

To protect my skin, I swore off harsh products and face products that claimed to be a “3-in-1” or a miracle cure-all. Instead, I opt for a gentle cleanser that gets all dirt out of my pores, but is gentle, and I love Tula’s Hydrating Day and Night cream.

face mask for acne

Do face masks for acne 2 times a week.

Face masks are my favorite way to relax and give back to my skin after all the craziness I put it through. (AKA long runs in the hot heat, errands around a bustling city, etc.) I do them whenever I feel like my skin needs it, but typically, it’s about 2-3 times a week. I love the Mary Kay botanicals face mask because it hydrates, moisturizes, and evens my skin. I’ve also recently been using the Clarisonic Clay Mask, and my skin feels so clean afterwards!

To prevent break-outs, I wash my pillow cases and avoid touching my face.

I read these two tips on the Internet several times, but always felt like they were so miniscule that they wouldn’t make a difference. However, in an attempt to stop breakouts so I could go make-up free more (#lazy) I gave them a try. Holy moly, this really works! I wash my pillow cases and sheets often and make sure to keep my face clean.

Exfoliate 2-3 times a week for clearer skin.

I never realized the benefit to exfoliate and getting a nice, deep clean until I tried it out! I was sent the Clarisonic Mia 2 to try out and my 12-year-old dreams were fulfilled! I remember watching my best friend in 6th grade wash her face with one of these and feeling envious of how fun it looked, but still, skeptical of how well it would work for me. I’ve been using mine for over 2 weeks now and I’ve seen a serious improvement in my skin!

First off, I use the Clarisonic about twice a week. I found that my skin (combo to oily) got a little too dried out and off-balance if I tried to use it a couple days in a row. I’ve taken to using it on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s, and that’s worked really well for me!

I definitely would recommend the Clarisonic  Mia 2 if you’re looking into an electronic face brush because it’s easy to travel with, has two different speeds, and removes dirt and makeup better than anything I’ve tried like face wipes, toners, and scrubs.

Adopt a skin-friendly diet plan!

I make sure that I get as many leafy green vegetables and water as possible in my diet because I know that’s what’s going to make my skin clear and glowy! I’m not a huge fan of salad after salad, so I’ll stick spinach in my smoothies and I love roasting kale. Also, I try to have water first thing when I wake up, and I make sure that I have a bottle with me at all times so I keep drinking it.

All of these tips have really managed to work for me! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me over on Instagram (@cristina96x), especially about my new Clarisonic.

What are your best tips for clearing up your skin?

Cristina
